Every January, communities around the world gather to celebrate the life and work of Robert Burns — and to do it in a way that would likely meet with his approval: with poetry, music, good food, good friends, and a well-stocked bar.
Who was Robert Burns?
Poet. Songwriter. Farmer. Romantic. Satirist.
Robert Burns, Scotland’s national poet, is celebrated worldwide for his enduring messages of friendship, equality, community, and shared humanity. More than two centuries after his death, his legacy continues to thrive in Anchorage through the The Anchorage Robert Burns Appreciation Society (TARBAS), a nonprofit organization that hosts the annual Burns Supper that honors Scottish heritage. Through traditional music, poetry, fellowship, and charitable giving, TARBAS not only keeps Burns’ spirit alive but also extends his values into the local community by supporting charitable causes and fostering cultural understanding, making his influence a living and meaningful part of Anchorage’s social fabric.
What is a Burns Supper?
A Burns Supper is part dinner, part literary celebration, part ceremony– and, if done properly, a very good excuse to gather around a table with friends.
The evening traditionally includes poetry, music, speeches, toasts, a formal dinner, and the famous Address to the Haggis.
From Scotland to Alaska and communities around the world, Burns Suppers bring people together to celebrate words, wit, and spirit of Robert Burns.
